In many places in this site I have mentioned that pride is the main human defect. Now I am going to explain why that is.
First of all I want to distinguish pride from dignity. Pride is always based on imaginative, illusionary human qualities, i.e. on that we want (we really want a lot) to be. Therefore when somebody wants to say or to show that we do not have that what we imagine to have we feel affected, threatened, because deeply inside us we know that we are fooling ourselves but we do not want to confess it because our confidence is based on that. And if it falls down – we experience deep personal crisis.
And that is why the pride is the worst vice, because it creates and protects the ego – that imaginative I which we want to be.
The opposite of pride – dignity is based only on really existing qualities and it cannot be hurt and affected – nobody can offend us if he claims that we do not have certain quality which we deeply inside us know that we have and every day we convince ourselves that it works wonderfully for us. Therefore dignity does not feel the need to be protected and is one armor-plate to our real ME.
See the impact of compliments – if they confirm our imaginative qualities we feel ourselves flattered and we feel pleasure because somebody else’s statements muffled our uncertainties.
But if the compliments are pointed to qualities which we have for real we are bored because we know that they try to manipulate us.
