Any child will tell you the lesson technology: get up, sit down, open the notebook, read the textbook, close the notebook, open the diary, finish the lesson.
This doesn’t work anymore. The new children agreed with our model, but did not accept it. The pedagogy of coercion is an old pedagogy. Therefore, modern children are bored at school.
We weren’t bored in this school because we were raised differently. Parents forced their children, society forced them. The children grew up basically in an authoritarian environment. This was considered normal. Now you can’t do that. I will quote the words of the great teacher Sukhomlinsky: “My heart stops when I think about a child who sits and gets bored in class and gets a bad mark.” So I’m torn.
Some teachers can’t wait to go to school on September 1 and start giving out grades. Usually the teacher goes to the child with an object in his hands. He already knows everything. What we need is a pedagogy of cooperation—it means going to the subject together with the child, learning together. They comprehend together, they agree with each other – teacher and student.
In the old type of school, children are doomed to repetition and obedience. Three thousand lessons, forty answers a day plus homework. Childhood passes in this.
“Lesson” is a lofty concept with deep meaning. But today this meaning is lost. A lesson is a light that helps a child find his way and understand the challenges of life. These thousands of lessons should become one path – a good, bright, joyful path of knowledge.
And the teacher is the one who is looking, who is on the way. He should be happy and anxious. Will the lesson take place, will the students follow it? A good teacher asks questions, he does not expect the right answer, but in anticipation of reflection, idea, thought…
