spaceweather.com: The chance of a major solar flare has just increased, with two dangerous sunspots now facing Earth.

AR3664 has more than doubled in size in the last 48 hours, becoming one of the largest sunspots of the current solar cycle. It’s embedded in this magnetic map of the Sun from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory:

Among the dark cores of a sunspot, magnetic poles of opposite polarity collide in explosive proximity. As a result, AR3664 now poses a threat to X-flares, like its more active relative AR3663 in the northern hemisphere.
