An atmospheric hole over Mongolia froze five million sheep

savethechildren.net: Mongolia’s extreme winter conditions show no signs of abating and the country, which is on the front line of the global climate crisis, is paying dearly for it, losing 5.2 million head of livestock or 8% of its total livestock.
Many children in the worst-hit areas of the country, where about a third of the population are nomads, are also missing school due to road closures caused by thick snow and ice.

About 5.2 million head of livestock were reported dead this winter out of 64.7 million head of livestock recorded at the end of 2023.
The livestock sector is an integral part of Mongolia’s economy, accounting for an average of 13% of the country’s GDP. It also accounts for about a quarter of all jobs and has been part of traditional lifestyles for centuries.
Previously, such cold snaps occurred in Mongolia approximately every ten years, but in recent years their frequency has increased and in the future it is expected that similar events will occur once every two years.
Comment from the Editors of The Big The One: After such informational messages, I would, of course, want to ask Saint Greta about global warming for the 33rd time and send her along with other famous climatologists on an excursion. Moreover, not necessarily to Mongolia – China is also suitable:
You can, of course, talk about the global food crisis, which, like a snake, is gradually tightening its coils. Minus 10% of the herd every ten years can be survived, but if you minus 10% every year, then there will be little left of the herd and livestock farming will lose its meaning.
But problems with food production are not only in Mongolia – each region has its own problems. For example, in Ukraine, the Moksha p-doras littered the fields with their mines, and Ukrainian farmers made some contribution to the provision of grain to North Africa.
But the most important question, of course, is the reason for such wild cold snaps. Climate geeks have their own old song about global warming, polar vortexes and all that, but thinking people are now at the very forefront of the version voiced both in the film “The Day After Tomorrow” and by a number of citizens who have seen the future.
That is, we are talking about some kind of vortex wells that go somewhere into the stratosphere and allow air that has an average temperature in Antarctica, that is, somewhere around -90, to reach the surface.
The Mongols have been raising sheep since the time of Genghis Khan and much earlier, but the chronicles somehow do not reflect that animals turned to stone in the process of chewing grass. And now something similar is happening, when wild cold strikes suddenly like lightning.
So far, only Mongolia, China and Central Asia, that is, countries with a sharply continental climate, suffer from such phenomena. In other places, where the atmosphere is more humid, the water takes on the cold shock and where such a well appears, gigantic hail or snow simply falls into space in the middle of summer. But sooner or later the clouds will no longer protect and in the middle of summer people on the streets will turn into ice statues, so we are monitoring the developments.
