This story begins quite normally. In 2006, a patient of a prominent New York psychiatrist drew the face of a man she said often came to her in her dreams. She claimed he was like no one else she knew. But he knew everything about her life and even gave her advice or warned her about upcoming events – later it turned out that everything came true.

However, the woman’s story did not initially impress the specialist. In general, psychiatrists face mysteries of the subconscious on a regular basis. It is known that during sleep, when the brain is resting, answers to complex questions often come to us from the very depths of the unconscious.

This drawing lay on the psychiatrist’s desk for several days. One day, another patient sat near her, who was immediately drawn to the face depicted on the sheet of paper. It turned out that this person also saw the appearance in question in a dream.

The doctor was extremely intrigued by this phenomenon. Over the next month, four more of his visitors said that this man was coming to them in their dreams.

Over the next few years, hundreds of thousands of people claimed to have seen this same man in their dreams. And the most mysterious thing is that they all had nothing in common with each other. It wasn’t long before many theories were born about who this person could be, but three of them are the most popular:

According to psychologists, it was an archetypal image (according to Jung) belonging to the collective unconscious. He appeared in dreams during difficult times (emotional development, life changes, stressful circumstances, etc.) in sensitive people.
According to others, it was the image of God or an angel – that is, one of the forms in which the higher powers manifest themselves in contact with a person.
Others explained the phenomenon with the so-called “dream traveler,” i.e. with a real person with superpowers. He could enter the dreams of people all over the world. At the same time, in real life it might not look like that at all – that’s why no one has yet been able to identify it.

The stories about this man so greatly intrigued mystery lovers around the world that he literally became a part of modern culture. The image of this person even appeared in several films and TV series, including the cult “X-Files”. He is also a character in several computer games, the subject of artists and a source of inspiration for tattoos.
