Scientists want to create a mega-Starlink that will block the Earth from the Sun.

futurism.com: An international team of scientists is seriously studying a wild idea about how to stop the overheating of our planet. They propose sending umbrella screens into space to block the path of solar heat.

Scientists report that they are ready to test their invention right now. According to the New York Times, the team, led by Asher Institute for Space Research physics professor and Technion Israel Institute of Technology director Yoram Rosen, says it is ready to build a prototype.

But there’s one big problem: the shield would have to cover an area of about one million square miles, or about the size of Argentina. Because this is too large a structure to be launched into space on a single rocket, Rosen and his team are proposing a design in which a swarm of small screens are launched into space, clustered in a structure and working together.

“We can show this to the world: ‘Look, there’s a solution that works, take it and scale it up,'” Rosen told NYT.

Technically, this idea has been around for decades. Instead of completely blocking the Sun with a giant umbrella, the researchers suggested that we only need to block one to two percent of our star’s radiation to mitigate the effects of global warming.

Last year, a team of scientists from Harvard and the University of Utah explored the idea of placing dust at the “Lagrange point” between the Sun and Earth to overcome climate change.

Another team proposed using a real umbrella tethered to an asteroid to achieve the same effect.

However, the sunshade will only be part of the solution, as the Earth’s atmosphere will still trap heat in the form of greenhouse gas emissions.

Not everyone supports this idea. Critics told the NYT that the sun visor would be incredibly expensive and unrealistic given the rate at which global warming is accelerating. This is not to mention the fact that such an engineering solution will have to withstand asteroid impacts while in outer space.

However, solution advocates argue that we must do everything we can to find a solution to climate change.

Rosen and his team are now hoping to raise $10 million to $20 million to build their prototype. “We at the Technion are not going to save the planet,” Rosen told the New York Times. “But we’re going to show that it’s possible.”

Therefore, the third theory remains – the theory that they really want to freeze the planet for some reason. But it is still unclear who needed this and for what purpose, so we are monitoring the developments.
