Question: Can the gross mind become sensitive?

Krishnamurti: Listen to this question and the meaning hidden in the words. Can a gross mind become sensitive? If I say that my mind is gross and I am trying to become sensitive, this very effort to become sensitive is grossness. Please understand this; don’t be interested, just watch. If, at the same time, I admit that I am rude, without wanting to change, without trying to become sensitive, if I begin to understand what rudeness is, to observe it day after day in my life – how greedily I eat, how I speak impolitely to people, what pride, arrogance and rudeness are characteristic of my habits and thoughts – then this very observation transforms what is. In the same way, if I am stupid and say that I need to become smart, the effort to become smart is just a greater form of stupidity; for what is important is to understand stupidity.

No matter how much I try to become smart, I will remain stupid. I can acquire a superficial veneer of learning, I can learn to quote from books, repeat passages from the works of great writers – but at the core I will still be stupid. But if I see and understand stupidity – in the form in which it is expressed in my daily life: how I behave with the servants, how I look at my neighbor, at the poor man, at the rich man, at the office employee – then this itself awareness will bring with it the destruction of stupidity. Try it. Watch yourself when you talk to a servant; observe how much respect you have for the governor and how little respect you show to a man who can give you nothing. Then you will begin to discover how stupid you are; and in understanding this stupidity lies intelligence, sensitivity. You shouldn’t become sensitive. A person who tries to become something turns out to be ugly, insensitive; and such a person is rude.
