On the Sun is X2.8, the strongest flare of the current cycle

spaceweather.com: Sunspot AR3514 exploded on December 14 (17:02 UT), causing a powerful X2.8 class solar flare.

This is the most powerful flare of the 25th solar cycle (so far) and the most powerful solar eruption since the severe storms in September 2017. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flare:

The emission from the flare caused a deep blackout of shortwave radio communications over America. Radio amateurs may have noticed signal loss on all frequencies below 30 MHz for more than 30 minutes after the flash.

It’s too early to say for sure, but this explosion likely caused a rapid coronal mass ejection (CME) with a component directed toward Earth.
