Patience is a very dangerous thing

“Well, be patient. Keep quiet. Do what they need to do – why quarrel?” – everything is right and proper. There’s really no need to quarrel. You can only die, but you don’t have to quarrel. It’s bad – a quarrel. But any adaptation, as the wise Freud wrote, is a small death.

Every time you have to endure something that contradicts your inner guidelines and values, a small part of your personality dies. There is a small psychological death.

And the formula is simple: first, psychological death, then social, then biological. Emotions don’t disappear anywhere, they stay inside and kill us. Although we smile and kindly talk to a person whose ideas, actions and speeches completely contradict us.

But you have to stand next to a tray and a napkin, smile obsequiously and nod in anticipation of a tip. Although the tip is questionable, it’s just the absence of a quarrel. And the opportunity to remain a pleasant person in the eyes of an unpleasant person. As a rule, there is no other benefit. And the payback is terrible.

Every device is a little death. Maybe the neurons of the brain are dying, maybe a piece of the soul is drying up and dying, but it is a dangerous and harmful thing to constantly adapt and smile. And stand in a footman’s pose at the table, waiting for an order…

Diplomacy is different. This is the science of how to build relationships on equal terms, getting mutual benefit and keeping the peace. And adaptation and patience are dangerous things. Don’t do what they need to do if we don’t need it. And you don’t have to be silent if you have to answer.

Life is more expensive, you know. And you can’t buy your health with tips. And it is necessary to adapt not to tyrants with high self-esteem, but to life. To survive, to live and to please others with the fruits of their labors.
