The astronauts are puzzled by a new wonderful atmospheric phenomenon

The astronauts are puzzled by a new wonderful atmospheric phenomenon

spaceweather.com:  At the height of the geomagnetic storm, millions of people watched as bright lights danced across the skies of northern and even southern Europe. But not all of these lights were aurora.
“To our utter amazement, we observed an astonishing phenomenon,” reports Martin McKenna from Swatra, Northern Ireland. “It was STEVE!” (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, STEVE).
“We were shocked by the intensity of the violet beam,” McKenna continues. “We could see it clearly with the naked eye, observing it in the brilliance of its subtle structures. My buddy Conor compared it to a tornado changing shape in real time.”
STEVE is a recent discovery. It looks like the aurora, but it’s not it. The soft purple glow is caused by hot (3000°C) rivers of gas flowing through Earth’s magnetosphere at speeds exceeding 6 km/s (13,000 mph). These rivers are fueled by strong geomagnetic storms like the one that happened over the weekend.
Wil Chung witnessed an even more impressive appearance of STEVE over Whitley Bay in England: “It lasted over an hour,” marvels Chung. “Strong auroras danced in the north while STEVE streamed across the sky in the south.”
Although our understanding of STEVE has advanced rapidly over the past few years, there are still many unsolved mysteries about this phenomenon. Each observation makes up about 75% of the mystery.
Comment from the Editors of The Big The One: The promotion of light adherents in STEVE’s understanding cannot but rejoice, but NASA writes the following about him:
You can only see STEVE by chance, if space physics allows. However, some photographers have managed to capture beautiful images of STEVE more than 20 times since his first sighting in 2015 .
We will not go into the mechanics of this phenomenon: optics is a funny thing and often everything is not at all what it seems:
The main thing is that until 2015 there were no STEVEs. And before 2005, there were no sprites, jets and other “lightning”; they existed only in theory, in the heads of a couple of crazy physicists who worked on the atmosphere. Therefore, now we need to think not about “proton rivers”, but about “what’s wrong with the Earth’s magnetosphere.” Or about “what’s wrong with the Sun,” the consequences of which could be much worse.
But the bright adherents think about something else and we cannot judge them for this. According to the theory of evolution, weak-minded species and races die out, making room for representatives of flora and fauna that are smarter. Obviously, something similar awaits both NASA and the people who blindly believe in it, so let’s keep an eye on developments.
