Managing your mood does not mean suppressing your natural emotions. Being in touch with yourself is very important! And, understanding yourself, get access to those opportunities with which you can be in the thick of life! And “don’t steal” yourself just because “I’m not in the right mood today.”
I don’t know if you have noticed that our body changes its posture, its shape, its position in space, its facial expressions depending on our mood… I think many have noticed. And, I think, they paid attention – this is especially noticeable when you look at others – that at the bodily level, a person’s mood is quite transparently read.
When we are in a bad mood (angry, for example), the back stiffens, the shoulders rise, the arms tighten, the hands clench into fists, the jaws tighten, the lips tighten, the nostrils inflate, the eyes narrow. Here, try to do everything described right now – and, I assure you, some situation will come to mind where you were really angry. And you will feel exactly the mood that corresponds… Although right now, maybe it didn’t portend anything.)
That is, there is a real immersion in the emotional state that corresponds to this state of the body. And now the main thing is not to get stuck in it!) Tried – and relaxed, let go) And when we are in a good mood (for example, we rejoice), we smile, that is, the large zygomatic muscle and the circular muscles of the eyes strain, the ends of the lips rise up, and the eyes squint. The body relaxes, the neck is released, the back straightens, the chest takes a full breath. And we feel good. And if we do everything this way now (carefully), we will automatically feel some relief. And maybe something pleasant will pop up in my memory.
Our bodily reactions are directly related to some of our emotional state. Which, in turn, is associated with some kind of experience. This experience is very diverse. Both pleasant and unpleasant. And this is normal – everyone in our experience has the whole spectrum of events that have happened to us with all the relevant emotional (and therefore bodily) reactions. Events, of course, are different for everyone, and emotional, and therefore bodily reactions are manifested by the body in the same way. Well, that is, of course, everyone has bodily features, but, in fact, this does not change anything.
This experience of ours, colored by some of our individual emotions, is stored in the annals of our consciousness and the unconscious. All our incalculable wealth is there. This is what we already know how to do! And we have access to the most diverse corners of it. It may seem that there is not one directly, but… Roundabout maneuvers are possible! For example, through the body. We can refer to those layers of our experience that we need as a resource state at the moment. For example, a situation when we did something great. Or we felt confident. Calmly. Friendly. Persistently. Resource? Of course, a resource! After all, it is clear that a state of self-confidence or a state of peace or a state of “fighting spirit” is familiar to almost every one of us. Even if for some reason we forgot about it, this does not negate its presence.
Yes, we may be devaluing some of our capabilities or skills, but they are still there. Yes, maybe it’s not very easy to attract them directly to your advantage, but! We can – by tuning up our body – get access to the resource state that we need, without even really remembering the event with which it is connected! The main thing is to understand that this is absolutely real. Because the relationship “emotions – bodily reaction” works both ways. We can adjust our body, lowering our shoulders, hunching our backs, go shuffling, dragging our feet, lowering our heads and looking at the floor – and a depressive state is ready. Once upon a time, I got into the soul of the thought I read from Virginia Satir that it is difficult to enjoy life while constantly looking at your feet.
And we can adjust our body in a different way. We can straighten our shoulders, straighten our back – sometimes such a technique as figuratively “throwing off a coat” helps.Raise your head and look forward, holding your chin as if “on a stand”. Relax your lower jaw and allow yourself to smile. Smile not only with your jaw, but also with your eyes. This is also called “Dachen’s smile” – after the psychologist who described a sincere, not a fake smile. Feel your breath and walk with a springy step. Like it or not, the mood begins to change.
Of course, the mood is not an end in itself. The mood is needed for something. For action. It is for action that we usually need resources. It is for action that we need a mood that promotes this action. The mood, even successfully created for itself, will not last long without action. Because nature does not tolerate emptiness. And it does not give anything just like that, nor why. Everything is done by nature – for some reason, so first understand what I want, what to do, what to get as a result, and then request a resource for this matter! Then the resource state directed to the action will be maintained by this action. It turns out such, relatively speaking, a generator.
I remember the old (Soviet times) arguments that our sellers in the store are unsmiling, and foreign ones smile politely. But foreign people smile for money! Do you really want the saleswoman to smile at you for money? But the point is actually that when a person smiles, even just out of politeness, his brain receives a signal that he is in a good mood – and begins to maintain this state with action, communicating affably with customers. Customers are satisfied with the friendly attitude and, in turn, show friendliness, and maybe even warmth. Which again contributes to the seller’s good mood! The circle has closed! The generator is working.
We can create for ourselves the mental attitude that we want to create for ourselves. But first we answer the question “Why?” – “To do what?”. And practice, practice and practice again! No matter how well and well we understand something, nothing works without practice. The road will be mastered by the walking!
